What to Do on Recovery Days So They Still Count

What to Do on Recovery Days So They Still Count

August 6, 2026

Quick Summary

Recovery is not the couch by default. Easy walking, light mobility, and extra sleep are training too.

Active recovery has a ceiling

Keep it conversational. If you cannot speak in sentences, it is another workout. A 20-minute walk, easy cycling, or a stretch you enjoy beats a “light” HIIT video that still leaves you wrecked.

Useful rest-day jobs

Pick one or two. Completing all of them is not the point.

  • Walk outside if weather allows
  • Drink water with meals
  • Do the evening stretch you keep skipping on hard days
  • Go to bed closer to your usual time, not later “because you earned it”

Sleep is the unglamorous steroid

An extra half hour in bed often does more than a massage gun. Protein at meals and some carbohydrate after harder days support repair. Ice baths are optional theatre for most people walking and lifting for health.
