Strength Training for Active Aging

Strength Training for Active Aging

Quick Summary

Muscle is a retirement account. Two weekly sessions of sit-to-stands, rows, and carries pay compounding interest for independence.

Independence has a short list

Getting off the floor, carrying shopping, placing a bag in an overhead rack, and walking at a useful pace. Train those patterns. Machines, dumbbells, bands, or bodyweight can all work.

Leave two or three reps in reserve. Soreness that lasts a week means you did too much.

A twice-weekly skeleton

  • Sit-to-stand or squat to a box
  • Supported row
  • Push-up on a wall or bench
  • Loaded carry with shopping bags or dumbbells

Protein and time

Spread protein across meals and give sessions 48 hours when you are new or returning. Walking on other days keeps the aerobic side honest. This is general education, not a prescription for osteoporosis or cardiac rehab — those have specialist programs.

New joint swelling, chest symptoms on exertion, or unexplained weight loss should pause the plan until a clinician weighs in.
