Listen for patterns, not one bad day
Everyone has an off week. Warning signs tend to persist, worsen, or appear with other changes: breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, coughing blood, black stools, crushing headache unlike your usual migraine, or a mole that is growing, itching, or bleeding.
Skin and “small” symptoms
New rashes with fever, sudden facial swelling, or a spreading area of redness after a cut can be infections that need same-day care. Persistent low mood with loss of interest in usual activities is also a health issue, not a character flaw.
- Emergency: difficulty breathing, stroke-like weakness, severe allergic swelling, suicidal thoughts.
- Soon: lumps that grow, bleeding you cannot explain, jaundice, or confusion.
- Scheduled: symptoms that last more than a couple of weeks without a clear reason.
You are not overreacting by asking
Primary care exists to sort the common from the urgent. Bring a short timeline: when it started, what makes it better or worse, and medicines you take. This is not a substitute for emergency care.
