Low barrier, high return
Walking does not require a gym membership or a new identity. Twenty to thirty minutes most days improves circulation, helps with post-meal glucose, and often eases the mental leftover from a screen-heavy day.
Speed matters less than showing up. A conversational pace is enough. If you can add short hills or a slightly faster last five minutes, even better.
Make it stick
- Anchor the walk to something you already do: after lunch, after school drop-off, or while a podcast plays.
- Comfortable shoes matter more than step-count trophies.
- If joints complain, shorten the session and add rest days rather than quitting entirely.
Safety notes
People with chest pain on exertion, uncontrolled blood pressure, or recent surgery should get medical clearance. In hot weather, walk earlier, carry water, and skip the heroics.
